Customers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have reportedly been told that they will no longer need to buy electricity for a whole month if they use Nuri pre-paid meters. A critical component of the company’s efforts to update and preserve the operation of these meters, the Token Identifier (TID) rollover procedure was successfully completed, and this update comes after that.

Charles Nii Ayiku, the General Manager of External Communications at ECG, told the Daily Graphic that the upgrade was necessary to make the Nuri meters compliant with the Standard Transfer Specification (STS) protocol. In order for the meters to continue to function smoothly and for customers to have continuous access to sales services, which enable them to top up their power balances, this adaptation is essential.

“This milestone is one component of a larger upgrade intended to ensure the continuous operation of Nuri Prepayment Meters. Customers who have not yet had their meters updated should contact EKG for assistance as we want to assure them that everything is continuing as planned, Ayiku said.

Many of the meters in Prampram, Accra East, Accra West and Tema have already been upgraded as a result of the significant progress made by ECG in its efforts to complete the meter upgrades in these districts. Ayiku apologized for any inconvenience the procedure may have caused and appreciated the kundoro expressed after the initial announcement.

To prevent disruption, ECG has previously urged consumers to purchase enough top-up credit to last at least one month as part of the current update. The business anticipated possible disruptions during the procedure, therefore this advice was delivered on Saturday, November 23, 2024. “To avoid sales disruptions during the Nuri meter upgrade, we advise our customers to purchase enough top-up credits to last them for at least one month,” the statement continued.

ECG remains dedicated to a seamless and efficient transition despite the early reservations. Customers who are having trouble topping up or whose meters have not been updated are encouraged to contact the company through the support channels available for assistance.

An important step to ensure that Nuri pre-meters continue to operate efficiently and offer continuous service to the increasing number of consumers depending on the system for their electricity needs is the upgrade process, which is expected to be completed shortly.
